We live in a world today that we can't dispense from the
media which is supposed to be mass media that show what interest the mass
public. But if you see the mass media today, we can see that it's owned by
specific people who have the power and then they control what the media broadcast.
Mass media is controlled by its sponsors ; advertisers government and rich
individuals, and the government has the power to make or reject what will be
presented on media. The mass media market will be according to the desire of advertisers
or governments and not considering the public interest. Also the companies are
representing the interests of minor etite in the society, marginalizing the
rest of public.
Advertisers influence the content of Publications and
broadcast government censorship of the media is illegal. Yet, it will
documented that newspapers and other media are censored by advertisers. For
example if a company produce beer it may pressure on the magazine or news paper
where it buys ad space not to print articles on the danger of drinking alcohol.
Commercializing of mass media is affecting our lives in
more than one side. Think about the products we buy, the style of our clothes,
the kinds of food we eat, they are emphasizing on appearance, encouraging us to
care about our own and other's appearance rather than about character, talents
and personalities.
Moreover, we can see that the products are becoming
higher and higher in prices.Why?It's the same quality and same size but it's
price is increasing because the advertisers are competing,we are paying the
price of the product and the creativity of the ad too.. they are working more
to let us buy the product, ignoring its drawback. For example,they try to make
us feel that we are not cool unless we
drive that car,or wear these clothes,
smoke to feel that you have independent spirit or drink alcohol to look
mature!!
Regarding politics, candidates nowadays attract votes
through false images created by advertising and media coverage .Also, every
political side oun media stations, and broadcast news in the way they want and
see what's happening in Lebanon. It's a "media war"!
After all, the concentration of media ownership is an issue;
it's a global issue, and the result is poorly-informed public, where it's all
about the owners and their benefits, ignoring public's interest. As usual, the
public is always the victim….
